The Fableist 395 Merlot 2021, Central Coast, California

The Fableist is a collaboration between winemakers Curt Schalchlin and Andrew Jones. Curt, owner and vintner of the heralded winery, Sans Liege, is known for his critically acclaimed Rhone varietal wines. Andrew, winemaker of Field Recordings spends his days planning and planting vineyards and has stood foot in just about every vineyard on the Central Coast. Together, they produce The Fableist, a collaboration that gives special attention to the craft and story behind each wine. 2021 Blend: 92% Merlot, 8% Petite Sirah. Vineyards: Coquina (organic), Hinterland (organic), Pomar Junction. Elevage: 95% Neutral Oak 5% New Oak. The label: A snake and an eagle were caught in a deathly battle. As the snake tightened its grip on the eagle, a farmer intervened and freed the bird. Feeling revengeful, the snake snuck up on the farmer with the intention to poison him. But the eagle spotted the attack from his perch, and saved the farmer. In life and business, the more good that people do, the better things will be, and maybe it will come back around. Tasting notes: Back from the dead, this Merlot has a classic claret character. Black tea, northland blueberries and wet concrete. The silky texture slides gracefully across the palate leaving behind hints of sweet plums, warm cedar planks, and freshly ground spices.
