Nervi-Conterno Gattinara DOCG Vigna Molsino 2019, Piedmont, Italy

The winery focuses on three Gattinara bottlings – Gattinara, Gattinara Molsino and Gattinara Valferana. The single-vineyard bottlings contain the best fruit from those vineyards. Soil: volcanic soil rich in minerals and clay – with good drainage. Viticulture: Hand-harvested. Vinification: Gentle destemming and crushing. Fermentation in truncated conical oak vats at controlled temperature. Aging: Aged for abaout 4 years in large, wood vats. Note: Only produced in the best vintages. The 2019 Gattinara Molsino is a dark, brooding wine. Smoke, incense, licorice and leather open in the glass, but only with great reluctance. A wine of tremendous persistence and presence, the Molsino is so impressive in 2019. It is also embryonic and in need of cellaring. The only question is how long. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s natural resonance, offering a glimpse of what will come in time.
