Materrra-Cunat Family Vineyards Right Bank 2021 Oak Knoll, Napa Valley, California

Materra (a rough translation of Mother Earth in Latin) is not only the name of the wine but also represents the family’s commitment to finding the best soils, climates and water, nurturing these elements and embracing and enhancing Mother Earth’s gifts to produce some of the highest quality grapes and wines from the Oak Knoll district in Napa Valley. The vines are farmed using environmentally sustainable methods and the production, storage and hospitality facilities on the property are all being designed in conjunction with the family’s commitment to producing the highest quality wines with the smallest possible impact on the environment. This Merlot-dominant red blend is inspired by its Bordeaux namesake and the vines proximity to the Napa River. Opaque ruby in color, with a nose bursting with red fruit, hints at the concentrated flavors to come. Initial notes of black cherry, ripe plums, and black tea, combined with a dash of spicy oak and vanilla on the palate. The mouthfeel is very plush and powerful with soft, silky tannins. The Cabernet Franc element is more noticeable in the finish, with its characteristic blueberry flavor and bold, long-lasting tannins. Varietal: 91% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 18 months in 51% new French oak.
