Broadside Merlot 2020, Santa Margarita Ranch, Paso Robles, California

Since 2006, Broadside has crafted wines that embody the pioneering spirit of Paso Robles. Bold, expressive and distinct, our wines are produced with intention and demonstrate our dedication to sustainable farming and winemaking. Located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Paso Robles is a vast region of rugged terrain and dramatic climate, with an unmistakable pioneering spirit. Maritime breezes and coastal fog roll in from the nearby Pacific Ocean, contributing to temperature swings up to 50 degrees between night and day. Ancient oak trees tower throughout the vineyards where a rare diversity of soil types cover the earth. Varietal: 82% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 4% Cabernet, 4% Petit Verdot. Winemaker Notes: By virtue of its isolated location, Santa Margarita Ranch enjoys protection from cooler Pacific influence and the extreme heat seen in the neighboring inland AVAs, making it an ideal appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Maturation: 18 months in 14% New French barrels, the balance in neutral French barrels. Tasting Notes: Beguiling aromas of cherry cobbler, cinnamon and Herbes de Provence. Robust flavors of black cherry and molasses, followed by bramble, tobacco and bittersweet chocolate notes at the end. The substantial tannins soften on the finish.
