August Briggs Wishes Red Blend 2018, California

The 2018 “Wishes” Red Wine is an extremely unique blend that honors the style of wines immigrants made upon their settling the Napa Valley in the early 1900’s. Rather than making wines based on one varietal, they crafted wines blending various grapes that were suited to their specific soil and climate. Over the years, this style of wine became to be known as a ‘field blend’ representing all the complexities of each grape. Coming to California, these settlers had their dreams of starting fresh in this new world but making wines in the style of their ancestry. This wine is named in honor of them as they pursued their American dream…their Wishes. Utilizing this “kitchen sink” approach this blend is mostly Zinfandel, but includes amounts of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and a dash of the rare heritage varietal, Charbono. This wine has a deep saturated color of dark purple with rich aromas of boysenberry, black fig, dark plum and cocoa powder. The wine is medium in body which makes it accessible for drinking young but has moderate tannins on the finish. This wine is crafted to be enjoyed now for big full flavor or will gain additional complexity with another 3-5 years in bottle. Varietals: 60% Zinfandel, 18% Malbec, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Charbono. Barrel aging: 18 months in 20% new French oak, 80% 2 & 3 year old American oak barrels.
