Latta Cabernet Sauvignon / Syrah 2018, Freewater Rocks Vineyard, Walla Walla, Washington

Latta Wines puts uncommon varietals from the most unique vineyards in Washington State on center stage. Years of scouring the geologically diverse soils of Eastern Washington led to an initial release of two very special wines, then four and so on. The extremely small production, mostly Rhone offerings are put forward from sustainable vineyard sites after fermentation with native yeast and aging in mostly neutral french barrique and puncheon. Latta Wines was founded in 2011 by winemaker and owner Andrew Latta. A ten year odyssey from harvest hand to Winemaker at a notable Washington Winery set the stage for the launch of Latta Wines. “This blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Syrah from Freewater Rocks Vineyard in Walla Walla. We co-fermented these grapes with the Syrah whole cluster and the Cabernet Sauvignon destemmed over the top. We have the framework and structure of Cab complimented by the flesh and funk of Rocks Syrah. A dark nose driven by graphite and black fruit peppered with a funky depth. Our Cab/Syrah is inspired by the illicit blending of Bordeaux and Rhone varieties that has been quietly going on for centuries.
