Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Mont Demi Sec 2022, Vouvray, Loire Valley, France

Since its founding in 1928, Vouvray’s Domaine Huet has been the standard-bearer for great, ageworthy Chenin Blanc. Year after year, the estate produces some of the world’s most compelling white wines – and in a remarkable range that spans sparkling, dry, semi-dry, and breathtaking dessert styles. As the estate prospered in the post-WWII era, Gaston secured two additional prime vineyards on the Premiere Cote that would ensure the domaine’s stature: Le Mont (purchased in 1957) and Clos du Bourg (farmed since 1953, purchased in 1963). Collectively, these three vineyards, and the wines made from them, account for Huet being the greatest of all Vouvray producers. With less clay and more stone than Le Haut-Lieu, Le Mont yields young wines of intense minerality. The aromatics of this wine are dense with residual sugar present on the palate adding a kiss of rich sweetness. All grapes harvest by hand, which enables picking by successive tries – each try being a separate pass by the workers through the vineyard, ensuring only the best bunches of ripest (or even botrytised) grapes. Vinification: Undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in large, old oak demi-muids as well as stainless steel vats. There is no encouragement of the malolactic fermentation, thus many Huet wines remain rich in malic acid, a character that brings an age-worthiness to the wines. The concentration of residual sugar in demi-sec cuvees is traditionally around 10-20 g/l
