August Briggs Meritage 2021, Sonoma County, California

August Briggs Winery is an owner-managed craft producer of small lot and sustainably produced wines showcasing some of Napa and Sonoma’s premier vineyards focused on a restrained winemaking philosophy that highlights wines of provenance, not pretense. The 2021 August Briggs Meritage is the 3rd production of this traditional Bordeaux-style blend. 75% Cabernet Franc, 25% Malbec. Appellation: Sonoma County. Aged 20 months in 25% new French oak, 75% 2-year-old barrels. Upon first taste, the Cabernet Franc seems to be a great pair with Malbec as it brings a deep core of fruit with a floral and savory element to the wine. While this wine is named after the great wines of Bordeaux, it is like some great rich red blends from Mendoza, Argentina. The wine has a nose of black fruit, blackberries and dark plum, and nutmeg, with a touch of oak. The palate is savory, exhibiting ripe plum and fig flavors. A hint of black olive adds to the complexity. It has a strong backbone with integrated tannins that lead to a luxurious finish that lasts and lasts.
