Smith-Madrone Chardonnay 2016, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District, California

Founded in 1971 with the purchase of 200 forested acres at the top of Spring Mountain, Smith-Madrone is run by brothers Stuart and Charles Smith. 32 acres of vineyards were reclaimed (originally planted in the 1880’s) from the encroaching forest of Madrone Douglas fir and oak. From steep, dry-farmed vineyards, the vines flourish in vividly red and rocky volcanic soil. The cooler mountain temperature produces wine of intense flavor, structure and longevity. “At Smith-Madrone, our goal is to make artisanal wines which are distinctive and are an expression of both the vintage and us, as vintners, but above all else, are wines which bring pleasure to the senses. Every year our wine is made from the same vineyards, pruned by the same people in th same way, cultivated in exactly the same manner and harvested at similar levels of maturity, yet Mother Nature stamps each vintage with a unique set of flavors, senses and charater.” Appellation: Napa Valley. sub-appellation: Spring Mountain District. Varietal content: 100% Chardonnay. Fermentation: 100% barrel fermented. Aged 9 months in 80% new French oak.
