Riebeek Cellars Collection Pinotage 2018, Swartland

The vineyards of Riebeek Cellars lie in a richly diverse area in terms of soil, climate and topography. Vineyards are situated at heights that vary from 60 m above sea level to 300 m against the slopes of the Kasteelberg mountains. Because of the topography, the soils display the same rich variety, with Oakleaf and Dundee alluvial soil formed by sediment from die Berg River to Swartland and Glenrosa soils formed out of underlying shale along the Kasteelberg mountains. Trellised vines with supplementary irrigation and dryland bush vines. Grapes were cold soaked overnight. Inoculated with selected yeast. Fermentation temperature reached 28 degrees Celsius. Fermented on skins until enough flavor and color were extracted for complexity and integration. Aged with 80% French oak staves and 20% American oak staves which is blended with unoaked wine to enhance fresh fruity flavors. The flavors of this unique South African cultivar are complex and exciting with ripe plum and fruitcake all beautifully integrated and then finished with subtle oak to for a lingering aftertaste.
