Powers Syrah 2017, Columbia Valley, Washington

Second generation winemaker Greg Powers has a deep affinity for the Columbia Valley and its viticulture. He grew up in the region’s spectacular farm country and helped his father Bill plant and manage Badger Mountain Vineyard. Powers wines are creatively blended and crafted to showcase Washington State’s distinctive vineyards and robust and diverse microclimates. 2015 vintage – 97% Syrah, 3%jMourvedre. The components that make up the 2015 vintage of Syrah were harvested from early September to early October, which gave us a great range of brix and acid with which to work. All components were fermented in our stainless upright fermenters with PDM yeast used on all lots. We then aged the wine for 18 months in 2nd and 3rd use 59 gallon French Oak barrels. Layered aromatics of blackberry, blueberry, and currant mingle with a touch of complex spices and herbs on the nose. The wine explodes on the palate with rich layered flavors of lush blackberry, Bing cherry and a touch of pomegranate followed by notes of licorice, dark cocoa, forest floor and a touch of mint. This Syrah has an incredibly savory sensation with firm structure and acidity that leads into a finish of fine integrated silky tannins.
