Poliziano was started in 1961 with an initial nucleus of 22 hectares. It has grown over the years to reach its present size of 120 hectares, all planted in vineyards. Its name is an homage to the humanist poet Angelo Ambrogini (1454-1494), known as “Il Poliziano”, who was born in Montepulciano. 85% Prugnolo Gentile, 15% Colorino, Canaiolo and Merlot from vineyards 400 meters above sea level, with various exposures. Soil is soft clay, slightly skeletal. Manual harvest. Fermentation in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature, with milling that includes repassing the must over the grape dregs. Fermentation and maceration take 18-22 days. Ages 14-16 months in wood. 2/3 in ‘barriques’ and ‘tonneaux’ of French Oak (80% second-use and 20% new), and 1/3 in traditional casks.
