L’Ecole 41 Syrah 2019, 375ml, Columbia Valley, Washington

Built in 1915, the schoolhouse is located in historic Frenchtown, a small community just west of Walla Walla, Washington. Frenchtown derived its name from the many French-Canadians who settled the valley during the early 1800s. By the 1860s, nurseries, vineyards and winemaking had become a part of the regions’ growing economy. The name – L’Ecole Nº 41 French for “the school” located in district number 41 – was chosen to salute these pioneer viticulture efforts. 2019 vintage – Syrah 82%, Grenache 16%, Mourvedre 2%. Each lot was hand harvested ripe and gently crushed into 1.5 ton stainless steel fermenters. Gentle handling of the fruit through hand punch downs and gravity assisted movements were utilized throughout the entire winemaking process. The wine was cleanly racked to 100% small oak barrels, mostly neutral, with four rackings over 18 months.
Tasting Notes: This full-bodied Syrah shows robust and spicy aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violets, black peppercorn, herbes de Provence, anise, and allspice berry. These notes extend into the palate finishing with a mouth-filling, savory richness.
