Jeff Runquist Wines does not own vineyards. The winery purchases their entire needs from growers, providing the flexibility to pursue varieties and flavors that would not otherwise be compatible to a single estate. Jeff selects grapes from vineyards that provide rich full flavors without loads of astringent tannins. “We work very hard to produce balanced wines. Wines that will age and become more complex with time, but wines that can also be enjoyed in their youth.” The “Z” Zinfandel, an ultra premium varietal red table wine coming from a single vineyard in Amador County’s Shenandoah Valley in the heart of California’s gold rush country. The Zinfandel grapes used to produce “Z” come from the Massoni Ranch, which was planted at the turn of the century. “The 2018 wine has a ruby purple color of significant depth with hues that are a bright, almost florescent, garnet. The Massoni Ranch produces wines with aromas loaded with classic Zinfandel fruit; black raspberry, dark cherry and boysenberry, and the 2018 vintage is no exception. The clean focused fruit reminds me of walking past a blackberry briar at the peak of maturity. Aging this wine in small oak barrels provides it with a bouquet of toast, vanilla, and caramel. Flavors of red raspberry, currants and toasty oak are delivered by a wine with a creamy luscious texture. Varietal Composition: 91% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah.
