Vines were planted in the early 1970s and the 200s. Terroir: Facing east, 300 meters elevataion, granite soil. Vinifictaion: Mostly whole-cluster pressing, indigenous yeast, fermentation, pump-overs. Aged for 13 monts in older oak barrels, unfined, unfiltered. Jean-Baptiste Souillard is a young, talented winemaker based in the Rhone Valley who is turning plenty of heads with his suite of refined, low-intervention reds and whites. With experience gained alongside young Burgundian luminary, Benjamin Leroux, Jean-Baptiste has made a name for himself in just a short time. He hunts for untapped old-vine sites on granite-based hillsides in the late-ripening northern reaches of the Rhone and translates them into supple, precise wines built around heady layers of perfume and spice. He is surely one of the names to watch in the Rhone Valley – part of a new generation who is redefining the region one small batch of hand-crafted wine at a time.
