Volnay lies near the center of the Cote de Beaune and produces only red wines, with 26 Premiers Crus. In parallel to the way the character of Chambolle-Musigny wines compare to other wines from the Cote de Nuits, wines from the commune of Volnay show the most delicacy, elegance and finesse of wines within the Cote de Beaune. With optimal southeast exposures, the vineyards have soil that is extremely thin and chalky, high in calcium content, producing the lightest, most delicate wines. The strip below, where most of the Premiers Crus are located, has soil with much less chalk and a thin iron-rich layer over firmly structured subsoil.
