Gorman Old Scratch Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 Red Mountain, Washington

“The name ‘Old Scratch’ is another reference to the devil, a nickname for him which pops up in classic literature. The fruit for this one is sourced from long time favorite Kiona Vineyard on Red Mountain, combined with hot new-comer Quintessence Vineyard, also on Red Mountain. This one spends 18 months in once used French oak barrels, and is 100% Cabernet, to the tune of just 500 cases being produced. It’s on par with Gorman’s style of showing big bold reds, which are not over the top, while delivering lots of layered complexity. The ‘Old Scratch’ Cabernet showcases a medium-full body, with firm yet ripe Red Mountain tannin structure, which will surely help it withstand the test of time. The nose is dark and brooding with notes of blackberries, hints of cedar, and the essence of dark roast coffee. When it’s opened up, things get going with luscious black cherries, notes of anise, and accompaniments of baking spice. Gorman’s use of 100% one-time used French barrels, means the oak characteristics are extremely well integrated.
