Gaja, Ca’Marcanda ‘Promis’ Toscana IGT 2021, Italy

The Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. Promis, from the Latin abbreviation, promissio, meaning promise truly lives up to its name. The grapes (Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese) are grown in the terre brune (rich, dark soils) of the Ca’Marcanda vineyard. The soil consists primarily of loam and clay. The climate–hot summer days, freshened by brisk sea air and cool nights–is ideal for the grapes grown here. Promis represents the combination of grapes from Gaja’s two Tuscan estates – Merlot and Syrah from Ca’Marcanda and Sangiovese from Pieve Santa Restituta. The three varieties are fermented separately and then blended in January or February after harvest. Aged for 18 months in slightly used barriques, followed by several months of bottle aging. 55% Merlot, 35% Syrah, 10% Sangiovese. Color: Deep garnet color. Aroma: The nose is rich with notes of licorice, sage and thyme. Its specific Mediterranean character is balanced with intense aromas of well-ripe small dark berries. Soil: Loam- and clay-rich terre brune, brown soils. Tasting notes: A medium bodied wine with silky tannins and refreshing acidity. It opens with sweet and juicy notes of blackberry and black cherry, and then it ends with a pleasant salty and savory hint. Aging:
