Failla Brut 2G Sparkling Wine 2016, Sonoma Coast, California

At Failla, Ehren Jordan produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah wines that are thoroughly modern – yet evoke the classical past. Ehren loves to experiment with his favorite varietals, coaxing out their various incarnations from different climates (cool, cooler, and coolest), soil types, and rootstock. Failla started a sparkling wine program at the winery, and the inaugural offering in 2021 was the 2015 vintage, and in 2022 they are releasing the 2016 vintage. It is half and half Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is treated as if it were a small artisnal champagne. The fruit comes from George and Nikki Bowen’s Fort Ross-Seaview Appelation vineyard, located in the coastal hills above Fort Ross State Historic Park, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Carved out of the larger Sonoma Coast AVA in 2011, the 27,500-acre Fort Ross-Seaview AVA was given special consideration for its soaring elevation and remote, rugged location. The fruit is taken to Cruse Wine Company and custom crush facility in Petaluma for processing. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed sent to various containers, concrete eggs, Austrialian oak foudres, and barrels. There are no addition to the wine, no enzymes, no SO2. The wine sat on lees untouched until August 2017, when it went to triage. A bit of sugar and yeast were added to start secondary fermentation. The wine sat in triage 3-1/2 years, and was discorged in January 2021. 2/3 was discorged for this wiine, 1/3 was kept for future release.
