Château Rieussec is a sweet white wine ranked as Premier Cru Classé (French, ‘First Growth’) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Belonging to the Sauternes appellation in Gironde, in the region of Graves, the winery is located in the commune of Fargues. For several generations, Château Rieussec has been a leading name in Sauternes wines. As early as 1868, Charles Cocks remarked that “Beyond any of the others, Rieussec produces wines that are very similar to Yquem wines”. Grape varieties: Semillon 90-95%, Muscadelle and Sauvignon 5-10%. Terroir is typical gravel interspersed with lime. The vines are 25 years of age and older. Once the wine reaches the winery, the installation of pneumatic presses helps careful handling of the fruit. The vinification is in barrel, with a small-batch approach so that each aliquot can be individually managed and subsequently assessed. There is a strict selection, with only the best wines going into the grand vin, Château Rieussec, which then sees up to 26 months in oak barrels, of which approximately half are renewed each year, as has been the case since 1983.
