Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 2017, Pauillac, Bordeaux

One of the oldest properties in the Medoc. True to its name, the vineyard sits on outcrops with a terroir similar to that of the Medoc’s first growths. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is situated in the terroir of Pauillac, one of the Medoc’s six communal appellations along the Gironde estuary’s left bank. The Pauillac appellation is limited to the communal district covering 2,274 hectares. It boasts 18 properties classified in 1855 (around 85% of the appellation’s total production). The commune is separated from Saint-Estephe to the north by the marshy area of Breuil, and from Saint-Julien to the south by the hollow formed by the Juillac stream. The plateau of Grand-Puy is west of the village, above the hamlet of Bages. This outcrop of the terrain (called a “puy” in the old local dialect). 2017 vintage: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon – 20% Merlot. The wine is a deep, bright ruby color. The bouquet releases scents of ripe red fruit, violets and spices. This is complimented by an attractive fresh minerality. On the palate, the attack is precise, clean and long, with its ripe and melted tannins. Overall, this is a wine of great balance, allying charm, elegance and freshness; it is aromatic, with an aftertaste of considerable purity. Average age of the vines: 38 years old. Soil: Very deep coarse gravel. Winemaking: A long period of maceration (about 3 weeks). Ageing: In French oak barrels (75% new barrels each vintage) for 16 to 18 months depending on the vintage. Among Pauillac’s wines, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is considered “a great classic”, capable of aligning its consistent character with the spirit of each vintage. The wines have a beautiful, deep color, the aromas are very pure and complex, subtle and refined. Depending on the vintage, one’s first impression may be of ripe fruit or flowers, often toasted notes, spice and vanilla.
