Château des Jacques Moulin-à-Vent Clos de Rochegrès 2020, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France

100% Gamay from Château des Jacques, a spectacular 67 acre estate in Moulin-à-Vent. Clos de Rochegrès is a 20 acre vineyard on a steep, elevated slope. The top soils are shallow and granitic, with some rocks. Hard bedrock lies very near the surface. Underground water reserves held in cracks in the granite deter drought. Grapes hand-harvested – 60-80% destemming of the clusters. Must is then chilled, followed by a 20-30 day fermentation in partially sealed vats. The cap is either pumped over or held submerged with grills to optimize extraction of color, aroma and tannin. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for twelve months in the cellars before blending and bottling. Tasting Note: Clos de Rochegrès has fine rose and peony aromas and flavors with a touch of minerals. The wine is generous on the palate thanks to its elegant, long-lasting tannins. Moulin-a-Vent is considered the region’s most Burgundian cru.
