Matt Hardin, a 6th generation Napa resident and farmer, is a partner in Barbour Vineyards, one of the most renown vineyard management companies in Northern California. Thomas Rivers Brown, winemaker for some of Napa and Sonoma’s most iconic labels (Schrader Cellars, Outpost and his own Rivers-Marie), has more than 20 100-point wines to his resume. Out of ftheir friendship, and the idea of working together, Caterwaul was born. 2020 vintage – “In 2020, we finally wised up and grabbed every great bulk lot from within the family we had access to. We also grabbed a little more fruit from Matts Pope Valley piece to keep the backbone intact across the two vintages. The nose is very dark fruited with blueberries, blackberries, cassis and some graphite. The tannins are perfectly ripe which provides a seamless transition from entry to middle and helps showcase the dark currant and plummy palate. The 2020 Napa finishes with some savory elements of sweet tobacco and grilled bread complemented by baking spices and cocoa that linger for a minute plus.
