Betz Syrah Domaine de Pierres 2019, Walla Walla, Washington

“Domaine de Pierres (Field of Stones), is the newest addition to our family of single-site Syrahs. The Rocks of Milton Freewater AVA is named after the large river stones permeating the vineyards there, creating Syrah distinct from any other place in Washington State. Our affection for site-expressive Syrah led us here in 2014, when we purchased the Ancient Stones vineyard and immediately got to work tilling the soil multiple times each year to expose the latent rocks.” A brilliant ruby-purple in the glass, the aromatics jump out the moment it’s poured. A bright core of rich red, blue and black fruit immersed in a complex bouquet of white and black pepper, green olive, violets and dried rose petal. The palate is full-bodied and plush with a juicy core of liqueur-like fruit: blackberry, raspberry, and cherry surrounded with fresh tarragon, green tea, and lavender. Expansive and supple texture is balanced by precise acidity which keeps the wine focused and supported by ripe tannins lingering through the savory finish.
