Hank Wetzel produced AVVs ?rst wines in 1975 and the wine world quickly took notice of the elegant Cabernet Sauvignons from Alexander Valley. Thirty years later in 2004 he decided to focus on the flavor profile that made the valley famous, releasing a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon known as Alexander School Reserve. The fruit is harvested from a single block on the western side of the Russian River. The vines produce small berries with intense color, rich flavors and incredible concentration. At harvest this lot impressed Winemaker Kevin Hall with great color and big flavors. Overall, 2016 was a more normal growing season than the last few years. Yields were slightly reduced, but the quality of the grapes was stellar. After harvest this lot was de-stemmed, fermented, then aged in new French oak barrels for 28 months. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, oak, and a touch of chocolate fill the glass. This is a rich wine with flavors of blackberry, black cherry, boysenberry, dark plum and chocolate. It is silky, yet concentrated with loads of structure and a long finish.
